When propagating or keeping a nursery or mother plant environment, proper propagation lights, whether CFL/ Ecolights or T5's are essential for good results. Thebigshop.com sell Ecolights (also known as Envirolights- which are similar but NOT of the same quality). The Ecolights are from Ecotechnics who make a whole pile of high quality electronic grow room accessories which we stock the full range of. They are self-ballasted (you do not need a contactor relay or Ecotechnics Powerstar to run an Ecolight as they are low wattage) and this means they are so simple to use- just plug into a decent Grasslin timer for reliability and set the pins to required light times. Pins out is on, pins in is off. One useful tip: if you are getting enough light using a CFL lamp hanger, then fair enough, but we would nearly almost always recommend using a reflector as it allows you to hang your CFL at a near horizontal angle rather than a vertical angle which only benefits the plants closest to the light- the only exception is when you are trying to get light at the bottom of the plant- usually a red CFL to increase size of lower flowers or fruits. For a 125w Ecolight a Euro reflector will do the job, but if you plan on using a larger 250w light then you will need a CFL Pro Reflector which has a larger gap between the ceramic E40 holder you screw the lamp into and the actual reflector canopy. The CFL Pro reflector is made specifically for 250w Ecolight’s to accommodate the larger square ballast unit at the base of the lamp. Incidentally, DO NOT handle the actual glass lamp part of your Ecolight- or any lamp for that matter. Always use a freshly dry laundered cloth,Tea towel etc. The natural oils on your skin will fry on any lamp and shorten it's natural lifespan.
We also stock the next generation of propagation lighting in the form of Maxigrow T5 Lightwaves which are great for creating more of a canopy above your plants allowing for a more even spread of light and thus creating a more homogenous or same sized selection of propagated plants or cuttings. The ability to bring up a large batch of identical sized solves a lot of the difficulties associated with propagating with other propagation lights, which invariably will produce larger and smaller ie uneven sized plants. They are really useful for larger nurseries or cuttings rooms as, given the size of the larger 8 tube 4” Lightwave. They are a larger initial financial outlay, but are part the future of plant lighting in horticulture.
